Barcarola 2018 - Domaine Foivos

White dry free-run wine; Protected Designation of Origin Kefalonia.

From selected Robola grapes of mount Ainos slopes (altitude 600-800 m.). It comes from the higher vineyards of Robola zone, only 200 kilos of grapes yield per acre!

It was named after the well-known summer festival "Barcaroles" that are held in Lixouri (an evening feast of August with brightly lit boats sailing in the harbor full of local songs singers and music) to indicate its origin from the robola region on the other side of the island, but its winemaking at the FOIVOS Winery in Lixouri.

Light green color with bright greenish sheens. Highly complex aromas with concentrated citrus, exotic fruits, ruby grapefruit and ripe pear flavors; lush, spicy notes linger on the sculpted finish.

The perfect company of fine fresh fish; accompanies also perfectly sauces and creative cuisine, seafood, pasta with white sauce, cheese and fruits.

Jancis Robinson 2019: Foivos Barcarola 2018 Robola of Cephalonia: 17/20: “There is nothing like good indigenous varieties to capture your attention. There's lively citrus and a slight note of wild herbs and a definite stony, dry mineral character. Wonderfully searing acidity, great tension and full of energy, with no attempt to polish away the variety's character – just slightly smoky/dusty, bone, bone dry and with great citrus purity and length. Beware: this is quite severe but also quite delicious. Chalky aftertaste.

Domaine Foivos

Foivos winery is the historical continuation of the Mantzavino Winery, which starred in the past two centuries in the world of wine, and made Greek wine known internationally. It is one of the oldest operating winery in Greece and has already produced, since last century, some of the best Greek wines that became known worldwide. Since 1999, a new dynamic effort has begun, severely restricting production quantities, and mainly making exclusively use of the excellent indigenous and autochthonous own-rooted varieties of the Kefalonian vineyard, and of the ideal microclimate of Kefalonia.

In the Domaine Foivos vineyards are cultivated with very mild methods and biodynamic approaches, rare clones of ancient grape varieties such as Mavrodaphne, Muscat, Muscatel, Tsaousi, Vostilidi, Thiako, Araklino. At the same time, the winery manages vineyards in the eastern part of the island, in the region of Omala, for the production of the well-known local variety Robola of Cephalonia. 

A special feature of Foivos winery is the aging of wines under water: Since 2016 the winery started experimental searches of the maturing of wine under water, by immersing bottles for aging in the sea. At the same time, it applies another one innovative method of aging and maturing wines, by submerging bottles under fresh water, in special tanks of the winery, allowing the wine to mature and complete under absolute conditions of constant temperature, darkness and absence of oxygen!
